Youth Parliament Esslingen - Living E-Democracy First binding Election to Public Office over the Internet worldwide
Esslingen, a 90.000 inhabitant town in southern Germany has a long tradition of active participation of (young) people concerning the local political agenda. In July 2001 the election to the city's Youth Parliament was the recent highlight, as for the first time worldwide personalized electronic signatures (on smart cards) have been used to vote over the Internet in a binding election to public office. This was only one part of the long-term strategy of using the Internet for E-Democracy and citizen participation in Esslingen; with an outreach to all social groups.
